The length of runways in three international airports Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA), Shah Amanat International Airport (SAIA) and Osmani International Airport (OIA) was found 3200m, 2940m, 2591m respectively. In Bangladesh at present the aviation activities are carried out from three international and five domestic airports. Similarly with the increasing volume of passengers and goods movement, airlines are introducing wide bodied, long haul and new generation aircrafts. The current design aircraft according to ICAO is of category E. Recently ten new aircrafts are going to be added in the fleet which includes two B777-300ER, four B787 Dreamliner and two B737-800. To meet the growing traffic demand at present Biman Bangladesh has included several modern aircrafts in the fleet such as, Boeing 777-300ER, Airbus A310-300, Boeing 737-700, Airbus A310-300 and Bombardier Dash 8-100 etc. The average size of aircraft has grown by approximately 25 percent worldwide in the past 20 years, and this trend will continue because of air traffic growth and the constraints on aircraft movements – particularly at airports. Global Market Forecast anticipates that wide body jetliners such as Airbus A330 and very large A380,Boeing 777 series will grow in significant number in the next decades. Thus congestion at airport runways, passenger and cargo terminals, and ground transport facilities is expected to increase, as will demand for additional and improved airport systems. It is expected that an increase in passenger volume from 5.8 to 10.2 million and increase in air cargo from 2, 30,000 to 3, 60,000 metric tons will take place by 2020 in Bangladesh. While the aggregate global growth in passenger carrier is about 6% in the past few years, Bangladesh has registered an average 8% growth in the last 3 years. As a growing economic country Bangladesh will face the increased demand. On the basis of the growth of global passenger movement from 2.9 to 6 billion in the last year, ICAO forecasted that the movement of Air Traffic will be doubled by the year 2030.Bangladesh is a developing country with a population of 155 million and GDP growth of 6 %. Keywords: Aerotropolis, Airport, Aviation Industry, Airport City, Urban FormĪir travel has been described as the defining mode of transportation of the twentieth century. Based on this, the study recommended that the design should create a modern airport city with a vibrant city center and attractive workplaces, in a location that offers exceptional access to the region, Nigeria and the world. The study concludes that the success of aerotropolis is borne out of a range of factors and criteria. It was discovered that MMIA and other airports in Nigeria were not built in line with the aerotropolis concept therefore resulting into difficulties to have an airport-based commercial core. The outcome of this study is that the Nigeria aerotropolis project is yet to be actualised because of some ranging factors which have varying degree of influence on each location. Other methods used to get relevant information includes unstructured interview for staffs of FAAN and NAA. All cases are carefully examined and observed for their merits and demerits with their contribution to the urban development. The local case is Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA). The international cases are Hong Kong International Airport, Chicago O’Hare International Airport, Stockholm Arlandan Airport, Kuala Lumpur International Airport. Using qualitative and quantitative techniques, five airport cities and broader aetropolis (airport-centered urban economic regions) around the world that are either already operational or in early stages of development were examined, four of which are international while one was local. The research method adopted for the study is the case study methodology which allows for a close examination of existing cases and gives room for how and why questions on the cases. The competitive advantages of the aerotropolis along with its key components, planning principles, critiques, and counterpoints are discussed. It consists of a multimodal airport-based commercial core (Airport City) and outlying corridors and clusters of aviation-linked businesses and associated mixed- use commercial/residential developments that feed off of each other and their accessibility to the airport. The aerotropolis is a new urban form that relies on an airport and its integrated surface transportation infrastructure to speedily connect high-value, time-sensitive firms to their distant suppliers, customers, and enterprise partners.
